The Importance of Handwriting in the Digital Age

From the NY Times article, which asks the question, “Does handwriting still matter?”..

As we put more and more emphasis on computers, handwriting has been falling by the wayside. Educators say it doesn’t matter much anymore. But in the Science section of The New York Times, Maria Konnikova argues there are strong links between handwriting and educational development. Children who learn to write by hand learn to read more quickly and are better able to generate ideas and retain information.

  1. Totally with you. Handwriting is really important. I teach the 9th grade and my kids turn in some really sloppy stuff. My handwriting isn’t the best, but I couldn’t imagine trying to take notes or give someone something I’ve written if I hadn’t been trained properly. Learning to write is also an imperative element in learning to read.
